Writing style and colour for my CD

Image
The chrome-like writing which is used on these CDs is the style I would like to be noted that I was hoping to convey through my digipak layout. Unfortunately there was no way i could have shown this during the design process on Photoshop.

Digipak back cover research

Image
These are templates I could use as inspiration- I have decided i do not want to include the title of my album or my artist's name like these albums (besides Eminem). I can use a layout and input material as inspiration for my legal writing to include in my product. I still (as I have in my draft) want to include the timings in my track listing just as Space Trax has for their track listings. I do like the use of the dividing live for the Arctic Monkeys album- I may give this a go.

Experimentation - Comparing my Inspiration

Image
Here I experimented to try and mimic the style of one artist who has inspired me. I used photo shop and layered photos I had taken of my artist to achieve this effect. I also edited the brightness and the opacity of the images. I had discovered this when I was visiting the site Consequence of Sound. I have decided I would like to try and attempt this again so I am going to take some more photos and try this affect again.

Complex CD Covers in my Genre

Image
Styles like this I believe would be too extreme , not only to accomplish, but for my artist. As we are aiming for him to be a new, niche and not extremely mainstream artist in our genre I fear it would be too much to design and release a cover along the lines of these because they would not fit with the video, the concept and the style. These albums stereo typically look as though they are for songs which are about the good rapping, music artist lifestyle and therefore entail things about drugs, money and sex where as the thought behind our song is very heartfelt and sensitive whereas this image would not convey this feeling or emotion.

CD Cover Research with CD Covers not in my Genre

Image
These album covers are not in the genre of rap which is the genre our song Moment of Silence falls under however these are covers which have giving me inspiration as they are simple yet effective. I like the idea of putting a boundary with my font between the photo and the text (as seen is Marissa Nadler Strangers and Blond by Frank Ocean.) I believe I will incorporate this with an effective font (as seen in Banks The Altar   and Genesis). The colour (as seen in WarPaint) is something I may include if i choose to print by CD cover in Black and White which is the advice we were given from our peers as we have used our artist photo as the black and white image.

Our practical Storyboard

Image
As well as the storyboard used within our video of our live version of sotry boarding we are going to use a practical storyboard which contains notes and continuity tips which we can reffer to as a group whilst filming.  This is the story board for the 30 secind instrumental at 3:15.

Narrative Theorists

Image
Vladamir Propp was a Russian critic who analysed hundreds of fairy tales in the 1920s. He came up with the concept of defining characters to clearly defined purposes, rolls and functions for the story. We could use this theorist towards our video when evaluating our characters and the rolls they play. For example in our narrative structure we are hoping to reveal the reality of unhappy family life, the affects of bullying and the after affects of loss. Here we have come to the conclusion to use one character to express the emotions and realities behind these situations. Therefore we have defined the roll of our character as someone who will exploit the realities of emotional ordeals. Tzvetan Todorov was a literary theorist who suggested that at the main protagonist of a story always starts with a state of equilibrium (where life is normal and happy). The state of normality is then disrupted from an outside force and an event of resolution occurs to reinstate the equi...

Our Pitch Feedback

Image
From the feedback we have received we are able to see that the most popular ideas are using the protection and lighting and the use of using black and white as a colour pallet this is something we will take into consideration when filming. The black and white concept may be something we will include however we are going to film as though we would not be using the filter therefore, during the filming stage of production we will exclude it and work on the black an white idea during our editing process during post production. Something that received mixed reviews is the locations we've decided on using to film (inside the white room and outside using natural lighting) although said "if accessible it can be pulled off well" this has left us with an conception of uncertainty and we have decided to take care when filming however keeping back up plans during our story boarding process in case things don't work or do not look how we are hoping them to.  Other feedback (o...

Andrew Goodwin's Seven Features of Music Videos

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routines in boy/girl groups, aspiration in HipHop.) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting) There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visuals reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting) The demands of record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style). There is frequent reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of female body. The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work (a visual style). There are often intertexual reference (to films, TV programs, other music videos etc).

Music Video Techniques

Image
Cutting to the beat -   Every time a beat occurs, there is a different shot. The editing will have to keep up with the beat. an example of this is White Stripe's video Hardest Button To Button. Effects -  Effects are used in music videos to add to the narrative. The Major record labels will use effects in these videos. In the music video, ‘’I Need A Doctor’’ Dr. Dre  crashes 3 Lamborghini cars. Miming and Lip sync -   In every video Artists mine and lip sync their songs. However, in Feeder’s video, ‘’Just A Day’’ they layer homemade fans videos in their video, with the fans miming their lyrics, this allowed for the idea of them already being popular to come into play as well as sell them to other and newer fans.   Sinead O'Connors video Nothing Compares To You features long clips of her against a black background. In the end she begins to cry and it allows for viewers to sympathize with her as an artist. This song was originall...
